I would - and use a rattle can to do that one rather than a brush - like what will be used for the others
I was under the belief that the white stripe 64 1/2 to 66 springs that it identified the spring not being to correct spec ie under or over a specific ratingAny other thoughts on this, as only one of mine had the white stripe applied in addition to the brown stripe on each All appeared to have been painted on with a brush

Ok, the springs we're definitely painted, I applied some paint stripper and it started to bubble. The one markings on the one spring look certain they were applied by brush, I'd lean toward Charles's explanation that they were probably a QC marking, as the other sping has no trace of white on it at all...
Thanks for testing the finish - first one we've got a reaction to, Guessing that its bare metal - not black under the stripped black paint the the marking stripes have black under them all also
Not to rock the boat by attempting to cut corners but I want to coat them in a matte clear to preserve the 50+ year old markings... thoughts?
If your going to restore the car be aware that some judges may deduct for that choice. If you do it knowing that and are OK with that go ahead. Just be aware.
Given your region, use and the cars exposure is it necessary to coat it to protect it? Clear may yellow, crack, trap moisture and cause other problems that you can't anticipate at this point. See owners tape off and refinish the rest of the part but that always looks odd to me. Maybe a light coat of one of the protective oils might be the direction I would go.
