68 Voltage regulator ID
« on: August 02, 2015, 01:01:27 AM »
Hi All

Just going through my box of parts looking for something to clean up and i came across my voltage regulator. Its been resprayed black with everything else, so i dont know if its original or not. I see the stamped markings on the lid (I A+ S F), and see FA-30 marked on one leg on the base, the other leg has made in U.S.A.

The cover is screwed not riveted.

The underside has a circuit board with the 2 outer tabs full length with ink stamps (circular with an A or V, and other with an A and Y).

The car was in a front on collision at some stage and all repairs were stock Ford parts. This could be an early service part. I bought a repro regulator, with the riveted lid. If its supposed to be screwed and the older one is more correct, would it be acceptable to switch the lid over?

Cheers

Its a san jose car mid december 67 with AC. The AC was not replaced when it was smashed as the firewall pad has no cutouts.

I would think blue cover marked C8TF in yellow.  The C8TF is the 55 amp regulator which A/C cars typically used.I have seen a few NOS C8TF service regulators that had the screws. I believe that is a early late thing. I think yours should have screws.

For a Dec 67 San Jose built would expect to see rivets. That's what I've seen on original cars from that plant and period

the thing that makes me think its a replacement is the stamping on the bare metal with Made in USA, and FA-30 on the opposite side. these don't sound like ford stampings.

the pic above also doesn't have any stamping visible on the side shown. so i think the jury is out.

where is the date ink mark on these?

On the base opposite the side where the wires plug in

Dose the base (at the side where the wires attach) have a cut out in the base so that its more like a notch or like its a cut out (the base still has a "bar" (under the cutout for the wiring plug)?

I think it is a replacement too for the reasons you mention it will most likely not have the bar under the wire plug going across like in Jeff's picture . The AMK repros have the best ink stamps but none of the repros will have the blue cover and screws . All the blue cover repros will have rivets which will be OK for you because although Jeff and I disagree on the early usage of the blue cover with rivets, 99.9% of others viewing will not know that there was even a blue one with screws at all.  The box the NOS example came from has a pull string to open the sealed box .It was opened for the first time by myself.

Ok, that nos pic also knocks outthe screws as they are 1/4" hex head screws.

the strange thing about the NOS screws in the pic is that typically we see pan head Philips screws. Like I said the reproduced blue regulators only come with rivets  anyway.  I would  suggest going with one of those.
