64 1/2 A/C Restoration
« on: March 09, 2011, 05:36:06 PM »
I recently came across the very rare unique power steering brackets for a 64 1/2 with A/C (see link for pics) and ended up having to purchase the complete A/C package to get the parts I wanted. Interestingly, the under dash A/C unit looks to be from a very early mustang, its case is stamped March 31 1964 B.  Don't know the significance of the "B".

All the A/C and power steering parts came from the same car and were from a 64 1/2 owned by Fred Glazier of Glazier Mustang barn. I'm thinking of restoring the A/C unit and wondered if anyone had used Classic Auto Air with good results. They seem to be the best around for mustang A/C restoration.

Some of the parts are:
64.5 6-blade fan for A/C
64.5 unique power steering brackets w/AC
64.5 fan spacer for A/C (thin base)
64.5 generator bracket w/AC
64.5 A/C idler pulley
4-groove crank pulley

Get Bob Mannel's book.  I don't THINK what you have is Mustang stuff at all and his book will confirm.

I've got Mannel's book, and the pictures shown in the link are in his book and correct for 64 1/2 (see Chapter 4 under accessories), hard to find stuff but what you need if you want to correctly equip a 64 1/2 with A/C and power steering.  As I said, these parts came from a 64 1/2 and were purchased from someone in the mustang parts business for a long time (it was his car).

Thanks for the tip on Classic Auto Air. I'll send the under dash unit to them to be restored to concours but insure they don't remove the date stamp on the case.

i have used CAA with good results.

+2 on CAA - good guys to deal with and sell quality products.  Their rebuild services are good too.  PS - Be very careful with your early style (64 1/2 - 66) clutch as they don't have any cores that they can rebuild anymore.

Sorry for the delay, here's the previous thread I posted on this showing the correct 64 1/2 generator adjustment bracket for an A/C equipped car: http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=3685.msg19966#msg19966

The part numbers for the bracket, bolts, and idler pulley that attaches to the face of the bracket are all listed in Jim Osborn's "64 1/2 Electrical Assembly Manual", page 64. The way the generator bracket for A/C cars mounts to the engine is shown in detail in Mannel's book on pages 3-60 and 3-61.

Parts from Osborn's manual:

- Generator adjustment arm (main bracket): C3OE-10145-C
- Bracket bolts: C3O#-10282-B Stud, 300936-S8 bolt, C3OE-10259-A spacer, two existing bolts for front and rear adjustment points/holes for bracket
- Idler pulley and bolts: C3OE-8A617-B pulley, 371082-S8 screw and washer assembly

I have a set I will be listing in about a week on eBay, along with other unique 64 1/2 parts such as power steering kit for 64 1/2 A/C equipped cars, remote reservoir and power steering pump set up, etc...
