Hi all,
As you know, on the 65/66 GT, the rear bumper guards weren't used because of the trumpets.   That, of course, would leave a hole in the trunk.    I found this on my Oct, 65 SJ built car:



Does it look like factory seam sealer slathered over the hole?   I suppose, asked in a different way, is this what SJ did for GTs?   Thanks.

Yes can confirm that the "dum dum" or sealant was used for this purpose.

Along the same topic... what did you find in the hole where the other end of the bumper guard bracket would have attached?  Usually would be a bolt that goes in after the gas tank is installed on a non-GT car.

Charles, if you mean at the lower end of the guard where it attaches to the valance, there was nothing there.

If you look at the LH bumper guard bracket on a non-GT, you will see it has a bottom tab with a j-clip.  A bolt goes through the edge of the gas tank, through the trunk floor and screws into the clip.  I've seen a weird square top plug used there on a GT car.  Was just wondering if you found anything.  If nothing went in the hole, would see light through it.

Charles, it's been afew years since I've had the car apart and unfortunately, I don't recall seeing the wierd square top plug.    I couldn't find that in the Assembly manual either.    Would you or Jeff happen to have a pic?

I'd have to look through a bunch of pics to find it.  Basically it was a rubber plug with a cylindrical end that fit into the bolt hole.  Then the base was flared and about a 1/2" raised square top.
