My friends think I am crazy
« on: February 07, 2013, 03:13:01 AM »
I recently sold a 71 Mach1 429CJ I restored about 10 years ago. This car has always won gold at the MCA shows. I just decided it was time for a new project and my new project was located in a Quonset on my family’s old homestead in North Dakota. A 64.5 D code, 289 V4, 4 speed with 4/11 rear gears and no other options which my dad bought as a project for him and my younger brother that just never happened. The car had been stored in a Quonset since 1979.  Because of rust (salt on the roads up north) it needed front fenders, doors, rear quarters and the very rear leaf spring mounts  and rails are rusted out. The up side is hanging in the Quonset with the car were ford original replacement front fenders, doors and quarters in the boxes my dad had bought. Here is where it gets crazy, or at least my friends think so, I located a wrecked donor coupe here in Texas which I cut the rear off of just in front of the rear toque boxes and at the roof that I will use to repair the rusted rear rail issues. (got to love una-body) and last weekend I cut the same part off the 64.5 I am restoring.

Yes I will have way too much time, work and money in an old Mustang coupe but my goal is to show it in MCA Concours class before the end of the 50th car show season.  Anyway I know allot about 71 – 73 Mustangs but not allot about  64.5 mustangs so I will be asking for guidance.

Mac  :)

Mac,
You're crazy - welcome to therapy. The alternatives to your "D" code project include bank robbery, pushing baby ducks underwater and couch potato (professional and amature).
Jim
PS - I have three "projects" ongoing, severe therapy I enjoy.
I promise to be politically correct in all my posts to keep the BBBB from vociferating.

I just wanted to share my progress and thoughts with everyone. Obviously due to illness I was no where near showing the car for the 50th and most likely wont show before late summer this year. However it is ready for final primer and I have most of the subassemblies completed so it is a matter of paint and assemble.  I originally planed to restore the car as built but since the cars front body 2/3 are still 64.5 and the rear body 1/3 is from a 66 it will never be a thoroughbred but it will be a very nice concours. Due to pressure from the spouse, and I must agree with her, I will not be painting it back skylight Blue. I am still kicking around colors but whatever the color it will be a 64.5 color and the interior will stay the original standard blue. A friend of mine who has done several Mustang restorations and will be the one to pull the trigger on the paint gun is pushing for Silver Smoke but I have not seen a good example of that color. I like Twilight Turquoise or Guardsman Blue. I will be surfing the net looking for more examples. Anyway I have been keeping photos as the work progressed on Facebook  https://www.facebook.com/victor.mclaughlin.7/media_set?set=a.889665467733538.1073741828.100000702798244&type=3
I will better organize them and post to the gallery when it is finished.

Yes, welcome to the nut house, we are all crazy.  I did this car for my daughter for her college graduation.  She had spent many years bugging me in the garage as I was doing '68 Mustangs and Shelbys, and continually telling me she wanted a '64 1/2 F code pink convertible someday, so I finally got her one:  They are great cars.
I don't always downshift, but when I do it is near a Prius so they can hear me hurting the environment.
