64 1/2 Assistance
« on: September 18, 2015, 12:33:05 PM »
Calling out for some assistance regarding 64 1/2 specific questions for the underbody.

1st picture: are any of the 4 holes factory? I'm not sure what was drilled by the PO as the car was fitting with a dual exhaust setup.

2nd picture: I replaced the rear drop off panels in the trunk, unfortunately the originals were rusted so I don't know what was there to begin with.
From the repro panel, what is the hole and square used for if anything?

3rd picture (firewall): do any holes look out of the ordinary and not from factory? Now is my chance to have them plugged prior to paint.

I did order the Osbourne Chassis manual but it has been delayed, thanks in advance

Car is an early 64 1/2 without AC, convertible, auto V8 289

1st pic, the outer holes are for the screws that hold down the rear upper seat frame.

2nd pic, you've installed 67-68 turn downs which are totally wrong.  You'll need pics of original 64.5-66 turn downs.  I would caution that early 64.5 may have some unique differences too.

3rd pic, makes my brain hurt. ;-)

Dom,
All your firewall holes match my April 64 Dearborn coupe, EXCEPT #14, and the large hole below it. I'm thinking that that might be the hot lead for your convertible top.??

Don't be too discouraged with your 67-68 turn downs. Ford hasn't serviced them since the early eighties, and as far as I know, the aftermarket only offers 67-68 units as "cut to fit" for 65-66. (If anyone knows any different, please chime in). ???

Just weld up the existing holes, and open the ones that you need. There are a few examples on this site if you search. If you can't find any pics, I can find some for you.

I don't have a 64.5 but I do have hole #14, looks like a screw coming through it but it is behind the firewall pad when I looked inside so maybe it is a ground of some type for the dash???  I don't have the bigger hole near it though....

At one time, rear seatbelts were an added on to existing cars requirement, so those inner holes may have been for that. Weld them up.

Thanks for the clarification, easy fix for the first pic, will weld up, as I assumed those must have been where the dual exhaust was hung.

2nd pic I'll research the turn downs.

In regards to the firewall, the large hole below #14 was for the aftermarket alarm, it was a cable that ran to a sensor on the hood, so that I'll get welded up. As for home #14 itself, I think I'll just fill it with bondo in case I do need it.

Thanks to those that replied, I really appreciate it, you guys are the best.

Here's the closest reference I had saved (first two pics) of a March 19 car.

From what I can tell, the 3 indents were a more defined in the originals, the repos don't look like they're pressed enough,  also looks like the hole of the back up light wiring was drilled just enough to feed the wire through.
I don't have back up lights so that hole can be welded up, along with the other holes.

Pic 3 is a shot of the turn down after the qtr panel was removed, I can only assume it was original.

Before you weld up that hole, you may want to verify how your neutral/park ignition circuit is routed. In 65 and 66 the wiring is in the same hole as the back up light circuit.

I think Dom is referring to the hole in the trunk floor drop offs.

Side note, I think the B/L holes are smaller on 64/65 than 67/68 versions offered.

In the #2 picture (highlighted with the blue box) yes you'll need to fill those - must be the replacement/reproduction panel your using that was made for the later cars and the quarter panel drain mounted in the panel

Yes that's exactly what I'm referring to

Side note: definitely agree with you

That's how I understand it, consider them gone ;)

Note that 65-66 back-up light wiring grommets are smaller than 67-68 where it passes through the drop-off.  You'll need to plug the hole and re-drill it to proper size.  The front hole and square can be filled also.  Slight aggravation, but better to fix now than later.
