Rust Dissolver - Paint Dissolver
« on: March 23, 2015, 11:49:23 PM »
Went to pick up some evaporust over the weekend and store where I usually purchase switched brands to Rustoleum Rust Dissolver. Says it will dissolve rust in as little as 30 minutes. I bought a small bottle and tested a few bolts and shifter rods. Stuff works as advertised...lighter rust comes off quickly but also noticed where I spilled a few drops on the floor, it dissolved the paint...so beware if you're trying to salvage any paint marks.

I plan on submerging driveshaft in evaporust. I've read it also can dissolve paint if left in too long? Any recommendations for how long is too long?

Thanks

I've done a lot with evaporust, have not seen it damage paint that was is reasonable condition. If there is rust under the paint then the evaporust will get to it, resulting in the paint lifting.
Try soaking for half an hour to an hour then a gentile rinse with water and go from there

I splashed a few drops of Evaporust on my well-oxidized paint a while back and it dried before I noticed it.  When I found it and wiped it clean there were nice bright paint spots left behind, LOL!

Sounds like the Rustoleum stuff is more like naval jelly.  Probably burns if you get it on your skin.

Evaporust works pretty quick if using in a heated ultrasonic bath.
