1970 Mach 1 console lid question?
« on: October 13, 2014, 07:13:21 PM »
I own a 1970 Mach 1, 351C 4V that I purchased new in April of 1970. The car has black interior with a console. The original console lid is the flat style. When I look at the Mustang supply catalogs, they list a lid that is padded looking, named a deluxe lid. I have seen the deluxe lids installed on many Mach 1's and Shelby's at local car shows. What is the correct lid for a 1970 Mach 1. Thanks.

I could be wrong, but have thought that the three hump padded console lid was used only on 1969-70 Cougar XR7 and 1969-70 Shelby Mustang.

Thats the way it's supposed to be, but my car had the 3 ribbed lid originally.
SJ was probably using up those lids since they quit making Cougars.
It had some splits in it when I bought the car, so I changed it out to the flat lid which is better because stuff doesn't fall off of it.
I do like the metal Cougar hinge though and changed out the plastic hinge that was breaking.
They put the deluxe lid on my car to get rid of it, but still used the junk plastic hinge, how cheap can you be?

+1  Looked through my pictures and only "restored cars"   had the three humps. All the original or unrestored cars I've got pictures of had the flat Mustang arm rest/console lid.  Must have been maybe 40-50 examples like that

Since your the original owner and don't have records showing it was replaced keep it that way ;)

Thanks for all the info and the replies from everyone. I bought my car new, original owner, and I always wondered if I have the correct lid. It looks like I do, the flat one. Good, I like it the best any way. Thanks.
