1986 GT questions
« on: August 16, 2009, 12:41:08 PM »
I have an unrestored original 1986 Gt I bought new. Any one have any ideas on replacing the original Goodyear Gatorback tires? I have the originals but they are pretty flat spotted from setting so much.
I dont believe they are reproduced yet.

Also I am looking for an original battery. 1986 had a white case. Wish I would of kept my original!

Thanks.

If you trailer the car, keep the originals on it if they hold air and aren't weather checked. If you drive it, you'll just have to take the point hit and install as close to the same as the car came with as possible. That would be a 225/70VRx15 Goodyear Eagle. You wouldn't want to be caught at a show with lower speed rated tires than the car came with. Some judges might let a higher speed rating slide and some may not.

As for the battery, good luck. You may have some luck at a swap meet such as Fords at Carlisle or Columbus, Ohio spring or fall all Ford swap meet. You might try salvage yards. Sometimes one will be left in a wrecked car intact. Sometimes they may have a bunch of battery cores and you might get lucky and find one there. But it's getting more difficult all the time with the EPA requirements.

Walmart has some large raised letter CORDOVAN qualifiers that I have on mine, may not be factory correct but they look tough....As far as the battery, just hose a black one down with some white spray paint, BIG LOTS has it for 79 cents a can and lays out nice. Hope this helps...

I had emailed John Kelsey at Kelsey Tires a few years back about it.  He said I was the first to inquire about it.  I posted my email on a couple of 5.0 websites and sent a letter to Mustang Monthly.  Must of helped because about a year and a half later he said he was looking for some new original tires to build a mold.  Someone on another site inquired about it again, but I think they are on hold on reproducing them.

No luck with Kelsey or Coker tires as far as reproductions. I am contacting Goodyear too.

I wonder if someone like Green Sales would have one? and may be there is a Ford dealer somewhere that would still have a dummy display battery that would work for show purposes for you??
