Original 65-66 Jack Instruction label?
« on: October 23, 2019, 03:43:10 PM »
I ran across a '66 SJ plant convertible that I am considering to purchase.  Its  a fairly low mileage c code car with original uncut sheet metal.  Jan '66 projected build.  I'm trying to inspect the parts and details that are there to see what has been replaced and what has not.  Can anyone tell the difference between an original jack instruction label vs a repro?  I've attached a photo of the label on the car.  it looks a little new, but most of the wiring and other parts on the car are pristine, including the original red deluxe interior.

If it's a repro, that would be an indication that the trunk lid was replaced and/or repainted, so do you see any indications that the lid was touched?

There were a couple of different versions of the original jack instructions installed during 66 production. Looking at other San Jose examples with projected build dates on Jan the -C version is what I'm finding on unrestored cars.

Now comparing the stickers most of the difference is in the art work related to the close up of the spare - larger, at an angle, lower drawing. Differences are numerous with misshaped lines, misplaced text and other differences. In the large text to the left of that there are issues with the misalignment of letters and lines. Sure there is more if I spent more time with both. I stopped once I got to a dozen differences. Of course most people looking at the reproduction would never notice and they pass inspection during judging :(  every weekend

Must say (done a fair amount of stickers and decals) that allot of mistakes are a result of a worker thinking they are correcting the original design or taking shortcuts and in turn loose the focus that they should be making an exact copy not a better one

As a note: We don't know what the source is of the decal you posted and if another producer (currently I think there are only two providers) makes a closer or correct one.

The following pictures were posted in another thread about the same issue

Lots of small drawing details. Lines and fonts (as we've seen on other reproduction) are heavier. There is some distortion due to cameras and angles but corrected for some of those

Power was down here to my service (imagine that  ::) so did another version with more

Some of the arrows point out spacing and alignment differences or even words in different locations
