Just some observations while cleaning with evaporust.
The area around the filler plug had extra red oxide primer paint on it. Looks like the filler plug was dipped in yellow paint then screwed into the housing. The paint would have acted as a sealant and also showed that the differential was filled with oil ?

Correct oil level is just below the hole and plug some not sure if what you found was suppose to work as a sealant.

Just a thought - thanks for sharing, makes you wonder though

I thought of the paint for sealant because it was common practice here many years ago to seal galvanised water pipes threads with paint

 :o Yeah, those were the days (YIKES) ...but we all turned out OK. (if we didn't eat paint chips anyways)
