Colors & locations of paint markings '70 351C FMX Metuchen
« on: August 03, 2014, 04:13:05 PM »
I don't see a Model 63C listed in my Mustang Detailing Guide. Would the front spring markings be the same as a 63B? That shows 1 tan/1 violet for PS & AC. Did they have the markings on every coil or just one or a few? What about front & rear shocks? Front sway bar looks like it should be 1 green/ 1 yellow, where at? Rear springs are 2 yellow/ 2 brown, where at? I don't see anything about the rear sway bar, did that have a marking? What color and where at? Approximately how wide are markings, similar to driveshaft stripe widths? or how wide? Metuchen, Mach1, built 11/20/69, 351C, FMX, PS, AC, PDB. Thanks!

It depends on 5 different factors so I can't answer that with a yes or no

That shows 1 tan/1 violet for PS & AC. Did they have the markings on every coil or just one or a few?

Please be aware that that they older publication is made from a 75 version of the MPC and lists the colors on the service replacement parts in some cases and is not specific enough to be useful IMHO. Using this paperback publication is like going back to the 80- early 90's IMO

As shown in other threads the coil spring markings were applied with the spring out of the car and either upside down or on its side as the runs often look like they are running up hill once the springs are installed. And yes they tried to hit ever coil but can be found lacking at the top or bottom most as the worker passed the brush over from top to bottom or other direction

I'll look through my notes, buildsheet collection and pictures

As we've mentioned in other treads - please make sure that all of the other details are correct on your car before you waste time adding paint marks since they are not required and if not there will not cost you any points. If they are applied they can cost you points and cause you some embarrassment. Incorrect things in other parts of the car should be focused on first before worrying about the circus colors are added - they can always be added later

Just something to consider ;)

Coil springs look like they were - 1 Gold & 1 Tan.  From a buildsheet equipped like yours - three months later

What about front & rear shocks?

White front - Violet on the rear

Front sway bar looks like it should be 1 green/ 1 yellow, where at? Rear springs are 2 yellow/ 2 brown, where at?

Green and yellow was a standard marking found on the big front sway bars 67-70 (GTs and Mach I's in general)  Picture is very flushed out

Yes rear springs 2 Yellow and 2 Brown - applied to the bottom (once installed) surface of the longer leaf springs right in front of the rear shackle

I don't see anything about the rear sway bar, did that have a marking? What color and where at? Approximately how wide are markings, similar to driveshaft stripe widths? or how wide?

Looks like its the same as some other applications - one green stripe/daub on the drivers side end of the bar

Hope this helps

And a little extra for you

Idler arm - green stripe on mounting arm

Idler arm - yellow stripe on the moving arm

Pittman arm - yellow strip approx around the middle of the arm

Center line - yellow stripe around.

Thanks for the help, I'll leave them off for now. Hopefully I'll see some good examples in Lincoln next weekend before I apply them. I didn't know that it's not a deduction. Thanks again for the advice!

Happy to help

As for finding examples at the show - be careful and only use original unrestored cars as examples.   Have hundreds of "restored" car paint marks that I use for "don't do this" discussions ;)  I'm sure there are some out there that may be correct on some of their marks - the problem is that you'll never know whcih ones are or are not

Have fun, enjoy the show and have a safe trip

Ya, seeing an unrestored, Metuchen, same options and similar build date probably isn't very likely, but maybe I'll luck out & get lots of pics! Keeping my fingers crossed! Thanks again for the advice & examples.

Yes its difficult that is why all of us get pretty excited and break out our cameras when we find a good examples.

Of course you can't be everywhere but that is why your here on this web site so that you can share in what others have seen and collected :)
