64.5 vs 66 lower rear shock mounts / spring seats
« on: July 12, 2014, 03:21:27 PM »
I was going thru my stuff looking for the rear leaf spring seats to clean up when I noticed the difference between the ones from my 64.5 and the ones from a 66 parts car I have. The 64.5 are beveled and slightly smaller than the 66.

They look like they are bent from over tightening, or rust expansion between the plate and the leaf spring.

They bend because the nuts used did not have the large flare at the base like we are used to seeing.  I pulled a pair of these off the pace car coupe I restored and they were bent the same way.  Didn't notice the differences in the edges, might have to restore the originals now that you pointed that out, lol!

Could the difference just be the matter of a different supplier?

When I layed the right one on the left one they are beviled exactly the same. Could be from over tightening or no washers I guess if they were tightened to the same spec. Anyone else out there with a 64.5 that can look at yours?

My 64 1/2 spring seats look exactly like that too. I dismissed it as either over tightening, or rust expansion, as there was flaking, stratified rust filling the gap when I disassembled them. Caspian65 might be right with the flared nuts / bending theory though. I'll have to look and see which way my car was equipped. (Have to find the bin they are stored in though :P)
I have some un bent parts from a later car that I had intended to use, and IMHO they look like same part, same vendor.
