1966 289 Tune Up

What Plugs and wires do you recommend? Dwell and Initial timing and plug gap?  Thanks.

The original plugs were Autolite BF42 with a Gap of .034". If the Plugs are no longer available from Parts Suppliers, they can easily be found on eBay. Plug wires can be found through various Mustang Parts Suppliers; NPD, VA Mustang, etc.

The Dwell angle of the Points should be from 26 - 29 degrees and the Timing set to 6 degrees Before Top Dead Center (always set the Points before adjusting the Timing).

Idle Speed depends on your Transmission; Manual 575 RPM and 475 for Automatics; both of these speeds may vary slightly depending on the health of your engine and / or any modifications that may have been made.

The plugs in the car now are Autolight BF42 Powerpoint and are tan and dry as a bone so I am going to keep them in.   I need a full set of factory service manuals if somebody has a set for sale, please let me know.


The Carb is a Motorcraft which is wrong. If somebody can point me to the right direction I would be a player for the correct carb with the correct tag.  The car is a 66 convertible A code 2 BB built in San Jose on 6-4-69 with a 4 speed T-10 with a 2.80 axle ratio. Thanks.

factory shop manuals are available from various suppliers. virginia classic mustang & npd are my first choices.

and that pump gas does NOT have the octane or lead as it did in '66, so be sure to supplement your fuel properly before tweaking anything away from the stock settings for drivability issues ( such as pinging/detonation which is always a possibility when setting to original specs)

I've reread your post several times thinking I'm missing something. The build date; just a typo? Also, A-Code 2BB? If 2BB means 2 Barrel Carburetor, you'll need the correct 4 Barrel Intake Manifold as well.
