Early Mustang End Caps
« on: June 09, 2014, 05:51:32 PM »
I'm thinking the early 64.5-65 tail light body end caps had a washer with sealer under installed before they were put on the car.Can anyone confirm this?

Those look like later ones (quarter extensions) - they have the provision for the sealing strip

As far as the original post - not sure. Luckily the detail can't be seen  and there is sealant installed from the inside of the trunk before the nut and large wavy washer . The washer you speak of may have been part of the spacers that held the extension away from the body during painting. They may have been  meant to be removed - no way of telling at this point

Early would be C4ZB-6528072-A (and 073-A, as C4ZB-6527702 - 3), without a grove for the seal, and yes they did have a flat washer (44720-S8), a sealer washer (358768-S) and a nut with a large sems type washer (353958-S100). Both washers are carried by AMK, the nut is not. Ford also used a lot of calk to keep exhaust fumes out of the car. Some federal regulation thing.

The steel washer, 44720-S8, is AMK B-12993 (20 ea, $3), the sealer washer, 358769-S, is AMK B-13742 (12 ea, $3). AMK also sell the calk sealer in gray, 0.19 in dia, a 13 ft roll, B-11608 $20.
For information, Ford hardware part numbers that are 5 numbers long are usually SAE standard sizes and you may find a commercial equivalent in a local hardware store (you need the dimensions to do this), the 6 numbered one are specials.
