Topic: Original engine?

Hi, I am trying to work out if the engine in my mustang is the original. The VIN of the car does not match the engine number but they are so close it seems like it has to be. The engine was also built 3 weeks before the car, which is another sign it's probably original.

VIN : 8T01T222878
Manufactured: July 19th 1968

Engine ID : 8T221878
Manufactured: June 28th 1968

The 8 digits on the engine block should match the last 8 of the VIN. The 8 must be wrong as this could only have been 1, 2 or 3 which dictates the body style. Then the 1 that should be a 2..... I dunno. But I cannot believe this engine was from a car exactly 1000 units before mine and ended up in my car.

you are fine there. engines did not get a full VIN stamping. that could just be a misstamp.

Yes but if the stamper messed up then the VIN's would not match. Since both numbers are within 1000 units the castign dates can likely not be used to settle the puzzle. The chances of a car with that vin showing up in a car with the other vin due to an engine swap after they left the factory would be like winning the lottery or even greater. I agree with Charles its likely a mess up on the line
