1964 1/2 Fuel pump question??
« on: July 19, 2013, 10:45:33 AM »
Hi all, I have just, last weekend, fired up my rebuilt 260. It ran through about 2-3 gallons of gas and then started sputtering. I kept cranking a bit but no fuel is filling up the carb. I opened the 2100 and filled the front bowl to get the car started, hoping it would help the pump, but after that fuel ran out it sputtered and stopped. Now the fuel pump was an old NOS, but not a Ford unit. It has the diaphragm sandwiched between the top and bottom halves, held together by numerous screws. My questions is since I'm very sure the fuel pump has given out, (it did start to make a slight ticking sound so I'm guessing the diaphragm ruptured?), I am wondering what is the correct looking replacement for this motor and where to possibly locate one? This  64 Mustang  was a June built Dearborn car, 260 v8, 3 speed.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The original fuel pump was a Carter button top fuel pump that possibly could be found on ebay but would need to be rebuilt by Fred Ballard in California as the halfs of the fuel pump are crimped together, not screwed together.  I am not sure but i'm sure someone would know if Fred is still rebuilding these pumps or not...

Thanks Chris. So if I don't go with a concourse unit, would a crimped style reproduction be correct rather than the "screw type"? I have seen where the AC delco replacements were "screw type".  Attached is a pic of the fuel pump that is currently on the engine.

You can probably get a rebuild kit for the screw-together pump you have.

More info about the correct 260 Carter pump can be found at this thread:

The rebuild kit for your type of fuel pump runs about $35 and most vendors carry it. Several members on this site can also rebuild and restore it for you. Check Out Tim's site too

Thanks for all the replies. I purchased a crimped style locally to get me going in the meantime. The car will be mainly for shows and I will be painting it this fall so i have sometime to find the correct core. The shame of it all is that i threw the old fuel pump away and i know it was a two piece carter but cant remember seeing the button top. Ugh.

Just happened to come across this thread, as I am looking for a rebuild kit for my 1964-1/2 260 with a carter fuel pump.  I know Fred is rebuilding these.  However, you stated that the original Carter was a crimped style.  I have an original owner car with only 32,000 miles on it, and it is a screw together pump.

One of the cars I'm restoring is an April 64.5 coupe with a 260.  Have the original fuel pump and it also is the screw-together type.

Chris I disagree with you on this. The correct original full pump for 64.5 V8 was a Carter X  part number 3734-S not a button top. Also was a screw together not crimped.  Fred has rebuilt a couple of those for me and does great work. That would be especially true if this car has a 5 bolt block.
