It is my understanding that they should be Zinc Dichromate.

I've found variations on door latches (the piece on the door).  Most I have seen have a galvanized base, with zinc with dichromate (gold) color outer part and latch clasps.  Some I have seen have more of a silver outer part and then gold color latch clasps.

If you decide to have the original latches plated, be sure to remove the coil springs as the zinc plating process will cause the springs to be more brittle and prone to breakage.

Agree with Rich... your original post was labeled as 'latch' color, which I took to mean the part in the door.

What does that color zinc dichromate look likelike?

Dichromate is a dye placed over a zinc plated base. Since its a dye it often does not hold up well to exposure and pieces often take on a zinc or sliver look over time.

Zinc dichromate has a goldish tint some times (on larger pieces - like large master cylinder caps) with a multi-hue with green and red shading. Finish often is determined or at least effected by the underlying metal and the process (how much dye and how bright of a zinc finish was applied) Also the finish will loss some of its "shine" over time with exposure to the air and things like cleaners

The alternator fan, pulley and nut in this picture are plated - Zinc dichromate

Fresh Zinc on right - Zinc dichromate on left
