65 Mustang Weird door stampings
« on: January 27, 2014, 01:55:15 AM »
Hi,

I found some 2 date stamps on the door and didn't know what they meant or if they were stamped after the fact.  I have a 65 July San Jose built mustang fastback...I took off the door panel to take the door lock out and wanted to record the date.  I saw the normal stamp that was in the center of the door (deep factory stamp) then I saw another date stamp as I looked toward the end of the door...This one was near toward the door was not very deep and faint, it was a week to a few weeks later then the "factory" door date stamp.  I looked at another 65 May SJ built fb and it had the faint stamp as well on both doors.  Does anyone know why there were 2 dates stamps on the door.  Has anyone seen this before?

Attached:

pic1 blue tape denotes where the stamps are
pic2: pass door factory stamp
pic3: pass door faint stamp

sorry not sure how to rotate the pics

Thanks!!

Mark

Are you confusing the date stampings from the inner liner and the door skin?

Each panel would have received its own date stamp - if this is it then its very normal

Hi,

I don't think i am, the stamps are on the same plain...The first picture shows where there located (under the blue tape).  The closet to the door latch has a faint stamp and the one toward the middle of the door is deep (one that I expected to be there).  I see the same stampings on my other cars door as well?  The faint stamp is 1-2 weeks later then the deep stamp...see pics provided

Thanks!!!

Looks like you have found the  stamping date for the inner surface (23rd)  and the assembly date (30th)  for the door

Hi,

So there were 2 stampings, one for when the inner part of the door was cast and one for when the door was assembled?  The "assembly" stamp looks like it was done by hand because it is not as deep as the one in the center of the door.  Were all door stamped with an assembly date?  What part of the assembly process was the doors installed, one door has an "assembly" date of June 30th and the other July 6, my build date was July 12th, Just want to see how far off from the actual build date they could of been off.  Vin in 243xxx, does anyone else have a vin near that?

Thanks for the info, I found it real interesting!!

Believe so in 65

The "assembly" stamp looks like it was done by hand because it is not as deep as the one in the center of the door.  Were all door stamped with an assembly date?

All?   Can't say I've checked door from every stamping plant nor kept tight records of those findings

What part of the assembly process was the doors installed,

Prior to the unibody being primered

Closest VIN I could find quickly in my pictures was from 246xxx drivers inner door surface was stamped on the on the 22nd (at least that is what I can make out - no stamping plant noticed.

From other documents we've seen three week spread of projected dates on cars all built/finished the same day
Don't know if anything on the car will give you and idea of how far off the projected date was on your car from the real build date. Largest (documented in a later car) I've seen was 8 months off but that should not considered normal ;)

If you choose to share I'm all ears  - and pen ;)

Have a fairly large spread sheet that I throw all that sort of stuff in. You never know the value of documenting and collecting things. You only know the disappointment if you don't :)

Mark,

I checked the doors on my current car as well as photos from my last car, both Dearborn built, and each door had just one stamping. I also dropped by my local classic car parts yard and of the 43 '65 and '66 doors they had; 30 Dearborn, 9 San Jose and 4 Metuchen, none had more than one stamping. Disappointing, I was hoping to find at least some or one with a double stamp, but no luck. I also asked someone I met recently, whose Uncle worked as a foreman on the assembly line in Dearborn and still owns his original unrestored very early built '65 Coupe and he has no recall of why there would have been a second stamping.

No help I'm afraid but it was interesting and a treat to talk to someone who was actually there.
