64.5 D code water pump 'level of correctness'
« on: July 09, 2024, 11:36:03 AM »
July 2 / 64 build date- Car has been in our family since 1970.
Water pump on the 289 was not black but bare aluminum C5AE-8505-D.
I think Manell calls for -A, or -C as original for this engine, but it is a late build.
Is this -D just the service part code item?
Does it present to judging any better than cast iron later pumps, and worth a rebuild, or is it a full markdown for not being -A, -C?

Others can chime in, but the C to D cast change makes it a service replacement?.as well as the 67 date code (67 with dots around it).

-D is the replacement.  A 64.5 usually has the -A, which if I remember correctly doesn't have the hole drilled for the later -C version used with alternator engines.  The Mannel book goes into this detail.

Service replacement -D as I expected.

Can I get a comment on whether it is worth rebuilding the unit for any judging versus cast iron pumps?

I am not well versed in 64 1/2 but a few things in regards to the concours judging are the same. I don't think things will line up properly without modifications if you use the alternator waterpump (D)vs the generator waterpump (A). Is the car supposed to have a generator? If a alternator car then the rebuilt D would pass because it looks the same with the exception of the casting number which are not relevant in this circumstance in all but thoroughbred class. If you can make things look like it was not modified then it may get overlooked but that is a chance that it wouldn't. There would not be a full markdown regardless because you still have a waterpump . However the cast iron pump on the other hand would have much high deduction liability given the different looking waterpump appearance the cast iron pump has compared to the aluminum style and different timing cover needed to use the cast iron waterpump.

Thanks for the comment.
Yes this is a generator car, all accessory drives (PS, A/C,) on the strange 4 belt drive.
This D water pump was on the car, fit fine, but the WP seal was shot. I am running a NAPA alum pump that is a functional fit now just to get some road time.
I think I will do the rebuild on the pump- sure looks more original and its only 'off' by the D suffix and I guess the black engine paint of a day 0 pump.

More then just the D is different but your  D pump apparently has already been modified to work with the generator brackets. It would be tremendously better then a cast iron pump.
