1967 S-Code GT fast back spring and brake questions
« on: November 05, 2013, 08:04:54 PM »
1967 S-Code GT fast back, 9" limited slip, San Jose, January.

The leaf springs have 7 leaves and the shortest one has this number stamped on it:
C7ZA ???6 AU
?20E6
The question marked stampings are very shallow compared to the others.

Even though I want to install new, correct springs, I am curious if these are correct.  Also, what is the correct number?

Next question, about brakes.
The turned portion of the drums (rear only) are right at 2" but the shoes have only 1.75 of lining.  Should this car have 2" or 1.75 rear brakes?  I need to get new drums, can I get 2" and matching shoes and use the existing backing plate, wheel cylinders, etc?

First off welcome to the site

1967 S-Code GT fast back, 9" limited slip, San Jose, January.

Wow all the needed info in the first post ;)    Thanks

C7ZA 5556 AU

First you mentioned you have 7 leaves on each side??  If so someone has had these apart and played with them - likely in an effort to fight sagging used/old springs. Sounds like they reused the lower leaf to make them sort of original. Four leaves is "normal"

With that said it does appear that they are not original to your car. Would expect to see C7ZA-5556-AM on the short leaf

Though often listed differently its not unusual for the brake to be listed one size and the shoes to be slightly thinner. Don't think there is a problem. Meaasure the shoe (you've already done) and the drum (old drums) and order the same thing

I am pretty sure that the rear brake size on the 1967 with 390 was 1-3/4 inches wide.

To go wider, you would need to change backing plates. The KH (Kelsey-Hayes) backing plates are marked with numbers.

70867 - Driver side 1-3/4 inch
70866 - Passenger side 1-3/4 inch

71086 - Driver side 2 inch
71085 - Passenger side 2 inch
