Topic: Windshield moulding studs

I have an April  '65 Dearborn built fastback.

I know the early cars had screws to retain the moulding clips, and later cars had small studs.
My car has the studs, but also has a number of holes around the windshield opening..



What's going on here?   I disassembled this car 5 years ago.  I *think* I remember removing some screws from this area.
How many studs or screws should there be in total for the front windshield moulding clips?

Does it look like the holes have had screws in them?
Do you have the same amount of holes as you have studs?
Your car must have been built during the transition period.
My Oct 64 Dearborn fastback uses screws not studs.

Revisiting this as I prepare to install the windshield.

There is a hole adjacent to each stud along the bottom, none up the pillars or along the top.
They are not at all distorted, so I don't think they have had screws in them previously.

I can only assume in must have been built around the changeover period, using a cowl that has the holes.

I am wondering if I should do something about this now, or hope I can pump in enough sealant to cover and fill the holes.

I can access the back side of most, so I could smear a blob of urethane sealant over the holes from the underside before installing the windshield.

Any better ideas from the gurus?

Urethane would be fine to seal the holes but should not be used to set the windshield. 3M glazing and bedding is what should be used as it is non hardening. If you all ready knew this I am sorry but it is a big mistake to use the urethane.

Frankly I would put a piece of tape on the body marking where the holes are.
Put a little smear of the non hardening windshield sealant stuff on them and install the windshield.
Then I would use the tape as a guide and put some extra sealant where those holes are.

You could also mostly seal the hole with a small pop rivet and then a smear of sealant

The car may be transitional.  I have heard others that have the same thing,  They have the holes and the studs both.  Probably when they had just changed over to the studs.

I looked at your picture and I just can't see the studs.  I can see the holes all right, along with spot welds under the paint, but no studs.

Are my eyes bad?

Lolz, yeah they are there.  The white primer doesn't help.  I have since painted the car, I'l grab another pic soon.

Interesting.  The reason I asked was to see if the moldings themselves would fit screws or studs in the two different locations or not.  If they don't, that would tell me which set to use.  On the other hand, if they used the screws and not fit the studs, how in the world could they be fitted?
