1964 1/2 1965 fog lights question
« on: November 08, 2013, 01:18:10 PM »
I am adding fog lights to my 1964 1/2 Mustang and was hoping someone could tell me exactly where the holes should be drilled through the radiator support for the wiring. Exact measurements would be great as I'm trying to duplicate "close to factory". Also, would it be best to re-tape the wiring onto the existing harness back to the firewall? (your opinions) and does another hole get drilled below the main harness near the master cylinder? Any idea on drill bit sizes would be awesome too! ;)

On my 66 "K" the centers are both 3 1/4 inches down from the top edge of the radiator support, the right side is 7 1/4 inches in from the top edge of the right fender apron, the left hand side is 5 1/4 in from the top edge of the left fender apron. Don't drill the holes until you get the appropriate grommets. I assume you are using a 66 type wiring harness so don't be concerned if it's too long.
Jim
PS - The grommet thru the fire wall to the switch is about 1 inch below the multi-pin connector and appears to be in a difficult place to drill. Again, measure the grommet before drilling. The 66 type cable is placed in the cable straps with the regular wiring. The 65 fog light harness was integral with the engine compartment using a non-adhesive tape. Your choice.

Thanks for the reply. I have heard that later radiator supports had dimples to let you know where to drill but there are none on my original 64 1/2. I'm also going to try a right angle drill to drill below the multi-pin harness and will probably retape the fog light wiring into the repro headlight harness I just bought.

I did buy the grommets for the fog light wiring at the rad support. Do you think there were also used on the 64/65's? Some images I see show a covering over the wires going through the rad support but do not appear to have grommets? I'm going to present the car as if the fog lights were dealer installed.

Since fog lights were not a factory or dealer option on a 64 1/2, there really is no "correct" way to install them.  You would be best served to route the wiring around the rad support instead of drilling holes.

Personally, I think you should leave them off, they look out of place on a 64 1/2.

Thanks for your response and opinions. Just always loved that look so I'm taking the role of the April 65' owner who wants to add them after seeing the GT package come out that month. My only worry would be if the generator would get taxied by the extra strain(although it is rebuilt). But while we're talking, check out the " saw this on an online auction" I posted today as well. That car looks to have been built in early June even before my cars build and it has fog lights. That was why I was asking about the grommets as that car doesn't seem to have them at the rad support. Thanks again

As I said, there is no correct anything for fog lights on a 64.5, wiring or whatever.  The car in the auction had the lights added.  I would never drill holes through the rad support for this.  Keep it something easily reversible, you may get tired of folks asking about why you installed them and you may want to take them off later.

If I was judging the car in a concours event, I would deduct points for them on a 64.5.  Your goal may not be to show the car, but just stating a matter of fact of how they could be perceived at that level.

A more period-correct fog-light setup would be the style that bolts to the front bumper, but very utilitarian by design and not much on looks.
