So first off...thanks Charles & Jeff for providing so much valuable information. I'm learning a ton just from this thread!
Looking at other Oct 64 San Jose K codes I've not found another marked like yours. Might have been a random incident and since it was only that K I doubt that it was someone playing around like other cases we find some times Now if your mistaken and the mark is over the black in that location I have a couple examples that would match up/support the finding. Can be tricky to remove just the crayon and not the underlying paintand the oils in the crayon after all these years can have an effect on the paint.
Didn't realize you had other examples of the K in that
upper area
on top of the black paint Jeff. That lends credence to it being on the paint vs under. From the pictures and in person, it certainly looks like the yellow is directly on the metal. However, with what you're saying about the marker oils, etc leeching through the original paint, I can't say for sure that didn't happen. Since the PO had already sprayed shiny black over the original black on the upper half of the radiator support, I couldn't tell if the K was already there like those three on the lower radiator support. They could have even scrubbed off the top yellow layer when prepping for the new black paint.
Also while both the K on the left and the 5, D6 on the right did seem to reveal themselves in a similar way (2 applications of stripper), the K seemed to behave a little differently. The black paint over the 5 & D6 bubbled right up and came off while the surrounding black was attached solid. The K required a little more scraping. Also there was definite waxy yellow residue still built up for the 5 & D6, whereas the K is more like a stain. You can see this in the pics. Maybe it did leech through? I guess I'd have to strip the lower K's and see if they left a similar stain under the black to be sure. If I had to guess, I'd lean towards it lining up with your other examples.
Hard to tell these subtle nuances when you're doing this for the 1st time and don't really know what to look for.
