Window price lists and numbers....
« on: August 21, 2013, 06:26:11 AM »
Question came up on another forum concerning variations in "original" and Marti window stickers for prices.

Some say the base and option prices were fixed by Ford and never varied thru each year.  Some say prices varied.

??

Were the stickers from-the-factory or did dealers type/print them too?

Believe window stickers were printed  (made up) at the dealer. Seen a number of different type fonts over the years.

Just my guess

I am of the opinion that the window stickers were printed  according to a price schedule at the Ford assembly plant where the car was put together and from which it was shipped.  I am almost certain that the dealer would never have been able to "construct" a window sticker during that period.  BUT the prices probably did change for some items during the model year.  For instance the list price of power brakes may have had an increase of a few dollars during the 66 year and it would have been reflected in the window sticker.  Just my two cents worth.

Let me clarify. Its not that I'm suggesting that the dealer made up prices (invoices showed dealer cost and suggested retail for each option) be the dealer IMHO did create the window sticker.

Prices did some times change but from the copies of invoices it appears not  very often during a year, and of course dealer cost were different for cars shipped to Canada for example

Like today dealers could sell the cars for what ever they wanted but I've found no document in the dealers info that states that the dealer was forced  or not forced to list prices on the window sticker for the same amount as the invoice suggested retail price.

Will say that all of the window stickers I've got copies of the prices do match but I do not have hundreds or thousands of examples, which IMHO would be needed to prove either way :)

The variations in font might be the dealer removing the window sticker, typing in his add-on options (undercoating, different radio, wheels, jacking up his price on a car model due to high demand, etc.) and then sticking it back on. I remember seeing two of my cars still on the car hauler with their window stickers (and adhesive protective covers) in place. The window sticker is also a quick way of identifying a particular car as to destination, VIN, etc, although there were a lot of other stickers that might have done that.

Dave - maybe the pictures are clearer in original form- are those window stickers or possibly invoices?

Just asking :)

There was a law past (sorry can't remember when it took effect but thing around 68) were dealers could not change the window stickers - guess that implies that there was a issue/problem with dealers doing that before that date - and reason for passing that federal law. Believe that is why we see the little add on window stickers in addition to the regular one on cars today.
