Warehouse find- 66GT350H and 68GT500KR
« on: July 12, 2013, 02:59:05 PM »
An associate of mine owns a warehouse and knowing I am into cars, he started telling me  about 2 mustangs that have been sitting there for 15+ years. As he started to describe them, i just had to go see. Finally made it there today and after pulling back the dusty covers there was a 66 GT350H and a 68GT500KR.

The lighting was pretty crappy but they appear to be unrestored with original paint. Attached are a bunch of pics that I took with my phone so quality is just okay.

On the 66 GT350 I did not see a VIN, just the Shelby tag with 6S668.
The  68 GT500KR was:  8T03R213221-03946

I do not know much about Shelbys so still lots of investigation to be done to see what is there, matching numbers, etc. I will also be talking with the owner in a few days  to see if he will even sell the car and  I just wanted to get people thoughts here for a start before I talk with him. I did some searching on line but nothing came up with those to Shelby numbers.

Any initial feedback is appreciated. Thoughts?
If I do move forward, I would definitely have someone more knowledgeable look at them. They are located  here in Massachusetts.

Looks like the 66 has passed through a number of hands after leaving Hertz (spending most of its time in the south east)- including maybe Carroll Shelby (registry reports that it was in his name for a few months in 2000) then Steven Becker put it up for sale. Last reported to have changed hands in 2000 for just under $60K. So if your dating is correct (storage for 15 years) someone bought it and put it away. Mileage appears not to have change much since the sale

That car looks like an older freshing up leaving some areas original/used and redoing other areas, has a steel hood, replacement radiator & fuel pump, rust on bolts and such would make me want to check closely where else rust might be growing (as usual), Holley carb and original tach has been replaced,

Steven Becker had the bright Idea to buy cars and put them in Shelby's name then sell the car for a premium because of his supposed ownership and share some of the profits with the heart fund. He used to call me from time to time bragging on how much he was able to get over market for the "in Shelby name car" . I told him I thought it was very fraudulent and that i didn't want to hear about it and was surprised Shelby would have anything to do with it. I figured Shelby stomached it because money was going to the heart fund (or at least I hoped that was the reason). Even though the car was technically owned by Shelby in the eyes of the law it was only on paper.

Thanks for the info folks, I appreciate it. Its interesting to learn about how these cars evolved and changed ownership.

Jeff,  Would you be aware of any info on the 68 GT500?

Update- I just had a nice 2 hour+ conversation with the owner and as it turns out he lives in the same town as me  here in Massachusetts and he knows one of my relatives. Between this thread and other forums, I was able to get quite a bit of info on the 66 and some on the 68, including ownership history, so he knew that I did some homework.

He purchased these 2 cars as an investment (66GT350  in 2000 and did not recall when he got the 68) and apparently has a number of other cars. He has no plans to sell them at this point, however, that was not out of the question,  but did ask for my contact information, keep in touch and grab a coffee.

If anything comes out of this I will let you know. Just a sin to seeing it get all musty and mildew as it is starting to get.

Again, thanks for all of the feedback and who knows what may come of this. Took me 5 years to find my Boss2, and it may take 5 to own a Shelby.

Jeff,  Would you be aware of any info on the 68 GT500?

Anything that I would have quick access to would be 15 or so years old. We're all waiting for the new registry for 68 to come out  with better and more info
