What a Day
« on: May 13, 2013, 10:16:27 PM »
I have a 66 Coupe that I'm restoring. Today I visited 2 transmission shops that refused to rebuild the C4 transmission. I have the transmission out and ready for rebuild. There reason was they wanted the car at their shop, pull the tranny, rebuild it and then reinstall it and make adjustments.
Then I headed over to Spray Craft to talk about what I wanted to do as far as paint goes. I started by stating that I wanted a factory paint job, just as it rolled off the show room floor. Here's what I got: The cost $6000-$7000 dollars!.......Their paint level 3 is a Dupont ful-base 2 stage B/C Urathane $2450.00 including a complete ext sand and buff. 8 year guarantee. Then the extras:
$1000.00 for stripping to bare metal, acid etch and catalyze Prime.
$800.00 for sanding entire vehicle w/long block and re-catalyze prime x 2  $1600.00
X$Per Hr for smoothing the vehicle dents and dings, gap/panel alignment.
$800.00 Color sand and buff complete
This does not even include the interior paint, the engine bay paint, door jams or trunk!

For $6,000/$7000 dollars I can learn alot..........I was surprised by the cost.
And if I wanted them to use PPG or Ditzler paint products the cost climbed even higher.

Unbelievable

Materials and labor for paint/body can be very expensive.  No disrespect, but $6-7k is dirt cheap.  Most of the rotisserie restorations that I've been doing have been at least 4X that amount with over 500 hours spent on just the body.  IMHO, this is the most important part of the restoration.

Believe you said you were going to try and sell the car when you're done, so you have no choice but to try and learn yourself.  It's going to take a lot of time.

The cost and body work can vary from region to region due to labor (hourly rate) but the product cost are fairly consistent (and its allot).

Cost me $10K just to get my CJ to the primer stage (the point when I sold it) and generally jobs are around $15K around here for a strip and paint. Currently this stage is normally the biggest single stage/cost as it almost always has been - just allot more over the last 10 years

I was really surprised by the cost. I just stopped in at one shop and there are other I'll talk with as well.
$6-$7,000 is 3/4 of my budget I setup and looks like I'll be throwing more $$$$ into the pot.
Thanks for the info....

I agree.. The usual rate for a nice job is at least 10K...

6-7K is cheap..
