Brake MC - Original or Service Part
« on: April 16, 2013, 06:12:33 PM »
Overhauling the master cylinder these days. My car is SJ built during the first week of August '64 (5R08C128532). Brakes are drums, non power.

I am wondering if the MC could be original. There is a casting maybe showing a date code (I guess since it is an imprint of a detachable plate) and it says 77-64 (July 7 1964??). It's a Wagner Lockheed (name is in the casting). There are also some part/engineering numbers on the underside (not clear in the picture, blurred due to poor lighting).

Probably of no significance to the question, but broke some mastic between the MC and the firewall during disassembly. Mastic present on the mounting face of the MC. Also mastic in the threads of the bolts.

Would appreciate any comments.

It's a Wagner Lockheed (name is in the casting).

Correction: I'd mixed up the markings when I wrote this. The "Wagner Lockheed" is only on the rubber boot. There is no indication of brand name on the MC itself. On the underside of the cylinder the above mentioned code is found plus "1.00", "DIA" and "R-4". On the side of the reservoir there's a small stamping: "4G23". Nothing else. Any suggestions?

It looks period correct, but most originals I have seen were Bendix.
