Mach 1 grille extensions
« on: April 20, 2012, 10:52:09 PM »
Does any body know about the 71 style hood latch supports brackets that run from the hood latch support bracket to the bottom of the core support? 71 and early 72 used 2 vertical supports and late 72 and 73 had 1. What I am curious about are the 2 stand off brackets that take up the space between the 2 vertical supports and the much shallower Mach 1 grille. I am searching for the passenger side standoff and was wondering if anyone had a parts manual and could tell me what part number I should be looking for? The drivers of left side seem to be pretty prevelant as that they were used all 3 years but the passenger side was only used for a year and a half.

Not sure what a part number will do unless your going to look for a NOS item but here is a scan form the 75 version of the MPC

I have a January 5,1972 build date on my Marti report.  My Mach 1 has the single hood latch support.  It has had the single support since I acquired the car in 84.  Is their any information you have regarding the changeover from the dual support to the single support?

I've never found an exact changeover date. In general the 71 had two supports and the 72-73 had a single support. We need to get a look at late 71s and early 72s. Chuck

Starting with the 71 model year and until May or June of 71 according to the 71 429 CJ Mustang and Cougar megasite. The grille either standard or Mach 1 was supported by two verticle supports one on either side of the hood latch. Also need to ad that there is a standoff bracket from the verticle support to the Mach 1 grille due to it being much shallower than the Standard grille. After May or June of 71 the support went to the single style which is nearly center of the grille. I don't know if say a 71 OEM grille has provissions for all 3 of the attachement points but grilles sold by vendors such as NPD have provissions for either the single or dual attachment points. They have some very good pictures of the 2 different supports on the 71 429 CJ Mustang and Cougar megasite if there is any confusion on the 2 designs.

Original 1972 grilles have provisions for using either single or dual latch vertical supports. Original 1971 grilles only have provisions for using the dual supports. Source for this information is Don Witt, owner, Ohio Mustang Supply. He has restored and parted out dozens of these cars. Chuck
Thanks, Chuck

I just wanted to point out the illustration in post #2 is of the standard grille, not the Mach 1.
