69-70 console lid
« on: April 08, 2013, 12:21:09 AM »
i'll kick over the hornet's nest on this i'm sure-   did fact deluxe int mustangs ordered with the console  come with a flat  console lid or the ribbed style found on 69 shelbys and cougars.   please explain-  mach's flat or ribbed ? boss 302's flat or ribbed?  difference between the three plants? early production  or late production make a difference?   or did console  installer just grab what was avail?  thanks

Since this seems to be a shotgun blast across the whole 69-70 production (all three plants....) rather than just Boss I guess its should be moved ;)

hi jeff -i thought you'd move it to  69-70 cars.  just hope there's a good explanation.  i own a dec 69 metuchen boss 302 came factory with deluxe int and console option.  console missing mounting screw holes in tranny hump- i do have two consoles that i can piece together to make it right.  i ordered a ribbed style lid from  a vendor.  if it isn't correct for a deluxe int 70 mustang then i can put it on my console for the 70 gt500 i have sitting in the next bay.  nice backup parts car eh?  just thinking that if the interior was upgraded why not the console lid too if ordered with deluxe interior.   my good friend has a may/70 dearborn boss 302 with deluxe int and has  a flat style sonsole  lid - the lid has  a  D0Z  part number.  just another grey area i suppose.

My car (see sig) came with the ribbed lid when I bought it in 81.
The original owner said he bought the car that way too.
Since Cougars were built on the same line for awhile, it could have been a matter of getting rid of the ribbed lids.
Mustang was spec'd for the flat lid and plastic hinge, Shelby and Cougar were spec'd for the ribbed lid and metal hinge.
I feel it's up to us as owners to decide if we want our car the way it was built, or to spec.
My ribbed lid had splits and the hinge was coming apart when I bought the car, so wading thru the wrecking yard, I changed it to a nice used flat lid from one car and metal hinge from another.
The ribbed lids don't last as long as the flat ones in my experience.
Interesting how they built my car with the high series lid and low series hinge.

  Hi,
Thought of a few things on this subject. We know that 69 Shelby's were built with the Cougar console,it is well documented & ribbed style. Please remember they were limited production, and less than 3200 built.Mustangs were big numbers--115,905 cars with consoles in 69,and 70,249 for 70    If memory serves correct from the parts standpoint the ribbed Cougar part was used as the service replacement,so even early parts changes would have the Cougar part. (even as a warranty replacement.)The weak hinge was the most likely reason for the replacement-it seemed to break
before the vinyl went south.Seriously doubt it is a plant difference, more of a date or production supply.Just wondering how many points are awarded
for this small detail

I have owned & seen 70 mach 1 consoles with the 3 hump cougar lid & they were always Dearborn cars.  I just thought it was a mistake on assembly line since 69 cougars & mustangs were on same Dearborn line.  The ones I seen had the metal hinge not the thin plastic.

Just for the sake of discussion, there were 52,253 of the 69-70 Cougar XR7s and 69-70 Shelby Mustangs produced. Now, I doubt Ford ordered that exact number of Humped Console Lids from their Supplier. I would figure a nice round number. Maybe 50,000 initially with an extra order when they exceeded that amount? Maybe 60,000 initially? Maybe 75,000? Who knows what the exact number was, but I'm sure we can assume that the number ended up being larger than total production which would leave a surplus of Humped Lids. I'm sure some of them were boxed up as Service Replacements. I know I removed a Humped Lid from a 69 Cougar Decor interior not long ago, Not An XR7, but since everything else on the Console was NOS replacement, including the base itself, then I have to assume that the Lid was also.

so it seems a metuchen car would have a flat lid  std int or deluxe int with console option-  ribbed ones were on dearborn cars  off and on.
