68 428CJ clutch linkage issue
« on: March 30, 2013, 05:04:59 PM »
68 428 CJ

The X-bar pivot bracket that mounts to the motor in the attached drawing
is formed differently than the one we have.
The one in this drawing (say for 390) has a part that bends under,
the one we have is almost flat with a jog.
This jogged side of our bracket has 2 holes that mount to the motor, but because
of the jog would require spacers or something.

Does anyone have pics of a real 68 428CJ in this area?
Or another drawing showing what that bracket really should look like
and if there are spacers between it and the motor?

Trying to do this right and make sure we're not missing something.

Here's the bracket we have.
See the difference?
For that bracket to mount flush with the block, it would have to have spacers under
because the bracket has a jog.

The bracket on my 69 428 has the same step as yours but also has a return at the bottom end that wraps the bottom of the block/skirt.  Brian

Thanks Brian.
I can't see the bolts, but did you just ignore the jog in the bracket and just bolt it down?
That Jog has to be for something.

The bracket you picture is the 69 version and not the assemblyline version used in 67/68 . The 67/68 version is slotted on the engine side and not slotted on the chassis side. The 67/68 is just the opposite of the 69/70 version which was a inproved design.Sorry I can't seem to put my hands on a picture at the moment. FYI you can see the slots in the illustration you posted.
