Topic: 1970 trunk light wire

Looking at 69 and 70 trunk light wires I came across this picture from Carlisle I took last month.  I havent seen a grommet like this in the trunk lid before....has anyone else seen this?  This was on a 70 Mustang deck lid.  I dont see it referenced in any literature I have and it doesnt have any engineering numbers stamped on the grommet.

Think this came up once before on another site. If I recall correctly I found others on 70's non on 69's will check again so that we've got a thread on this site - for the future.

What plant and time period is the picture above from - even though it appears to be restored

I don't have it on my 69.
Looks like your typical rad support harness grommet to me.
It's poor practice to pass wires thru metal holes without a grommet to shield them.
I'll have to see what I can rummage up in my junk box to remedy this.

The trunk wire was added to this car so its not original to the car.  My understanding is the trunk wire/grommet was purchased together, and sold specific for a 1970 application.

The trunk light was part of the visibility group in 69, and the convenience group in 70.
I wouldn't be surprised to see the grommet added for 70.
Yet another example of the myriad of improvements made that year.

Survey says !!!!    Well anyway in the limited number of pictures of cars with this option (trunk lamp) and unrestored I offer the following pictures. Considering that the edge of the hole is not flat the design/application of the black plastic grommet does not appear to be perfectly suited for the task

In a pile of Mustang parts a friend "inherited" (house foreclosure) there was a trunk light assembly that had a grommet with the coiled up wiring running thru it. It may have been from a Mercury, the p/n on the bracket was barely legible, so the trunk light option may have been a common item to both Mustang and Mercury, and with a grommet required for one, the other got a grommet too.

My original paint, super original '70 Dearborn Boss 302 did not have this grommet on it, though fitted with the option and wiring. It's a December built vehicle, if someone is keeping tabs. Looks like the wiring loom grommet from a '65/'66 engine bay loom to me, though not sure if the dimensions match.

It appears from some or all of the pictures that we are only discussing fastback trunk lids?

That grommet is pretty common on 1969-70 Cougar trunk lights. Someone want to take a measurement of the hole? I will compare to what I have.
Maybe a 2nd person could measure a coupe or convertible trunk lid?

The grommet is not shown in the 1970 Mustang Electrical Assembly Manual. In previous manuals it gives a Ford part number of C4AB-14603-A.

Unfortunately (typical issue with the assembly manuals) that just means that Ford wasn't going to use that piece at some point (reference day on the page or close to it) Could have been different the day before or a couple of days after the page was drawn.

That's always the challenge with those books and the way they were compiled
