Wouldn't all the diff paint markings be the same/similar since they were all assembled at the same place or were some of these markings assembly line markings?  I thought the diffs came to the plants fully assembled with the rear axle and brakes and were installed as a unit.

Many of the marks would be the same IMHO if compared to other rearends built at the same assembly plant around the same time. Not sure how many plants for had in the mid/late 60's to build rearends other than Sterling (think they were operational them)  Most of the marks suggest identification, assemblers, inspection. But IMHO there are others that were applied at the car assembly plant for their purposes

Bryan:

I redid my original 8" last in the spring.  It is from a 1965 Oct build.  I was careful during cleaning and only found this one prominent mark on the back.

Fred - what plant was that car from??

And we're assuming that the Oct date if from the door tag (projected build date)   ;)

Thanks

It is from Metuchen.  Build date is from the build sheet I found under the dash.  I also have the buck tag.
VIN is : 6T08C135871

Guess we need to compare (I've not so far) buildsheet and buck tag dates to actual build dates to see if there is a difference
