I am replacing the exhaust system on my 1970 Mach 1 and using the oval, rolled-end tips like those that originally came with dual exhaust cars. My question is: How far from the rear valance should the tips stick out?
I've seen pictures of tips that stick out from 1" to almost 3" as measured from the top of the tip to the valance above. (Since the valance is slanted inward as it goes down, an answer like "It should be 1 inch" can be confusing.) Also, I have to assume that the exhaust systems on the vast majority of cars have been replaced so the tip placement on many cars cannot be assumed to be where it was originally.
Someone posted somewhere on the Internet that the measurement can be found in the shop manual (and we know that
must be true; otherwise it wouldn't be on the Internet.). I haven't found it in the shop manual.
Pictures of an original car would be helpful.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
