70 Steering Column = Paint or Natural
« on: October 07, 2012, 10:36:23 PM »
First post.  Searched the site and could not find an answer.

Is the end of the steering column including the coupler end just before the rag joint painted black, cast, or natural?  1970 if it makes a difference.

Thanks,
Scott

The end of the shaft is a formed steel (bare) shaft

Thanks Jeff.  So clean it up and a little Boeshield it is.

What about the reverse lockout and the next approx 1-1/2" above it?  From your picture it looks bare as well.

Thanks,
Scott

I usually apply some of the heat treating (Gun bluing) to the bare steel them work it with a little steel wool to knock down the bright look you can get some times with freshly cleaned bare steel. Don't want it to stand out just blend in with all the different tones and finishes ;)

Excellent.  Thanks Jeff.  The Gun Blue is a great suggestion.

Just lightly - you don't want the dark heat treated look.   Sometimes I simply apply it with a clump of steel wool and work it in
