X engine code in a '68 Mustang?
« on: October 17, 2012, 07:15:21 PM »
I was just on the MCA web site and a guy on there states he has a 1968 Mustang with an X engine code. He states its a 390 2V.  I have never heard of an X engine code in 1968.  And I always thought the Mustang 390 was a 4 barrel(S engine code). The X code is not in any books or reference materials that I have...Anyone care to chime in?

Yes really unpopular engine for that year in a sporty car. Friend has a X code Calif Special.

Believe the MPC list it as well as the saleman's booklet for 68

Ford installed 733 X code, 390-2V engines in 1968 Mustangs, and C6 automatic transmissions were mandatory.

I all ways thought all GT cars in 68 were required to have 4V carburators. I discovered a 68 Calaforina Special X code that has the GT option on it's Marti report. Does any one know about this?

I might be mistaken but I do believe you could get a 68 GT with the J code 302 2V.

What kind of performance would the X code have? Would be interesting to drive one and see.

This is a case where rare doesn't necessarily equate to desirable or valuable .

Was it one delivered to Hawaii?  Never heard of of it  ;) LOL Would guess that being a Calif Special allowed for some "creative"  grouping of options.

Yes have a copy of a Marti report for such a car

Got a copy of a Marti for one X code (High Country Special though listed/billed as a Calif Special) - non GT but with HD suspension and option we see on some other GT and non-GT Calif Specials

Just noticed ( couldn't recall) that the X code is listed as having dual exhaust as standard equipment. Source - 4/29 Manufacturer's Label  Prices

That would address the confusion

Thanks Marty  - same vehicle Have a copy of the Marti for

The X-Code 390 2V was rated at 280 Horsepower. I don't know the Torque figures.
