Topic: 68 Radio Delete speaker "plate"

Ran across this in my files as I was looking for pictures to respond to another thread and thought I should share.

Car was a radio delete car (blank plate in place of the radio bezel and radio) . Never noticed that the factory apparently placed a rubber pad over where the speaker would have been located (would have missed it except the dash pad had been removed) Guess this kept things from passing through the dash pad to the area below or from workers poking through the dash pad while working below. Pad in the picture appears to have split over the years and had no numbering that I noticed. Was about 1/8" thick

Jeff that seems strange as it would made it very difficult for a dealer to install a radio.

Similar dark gray inserts were used in 65-66 for radio and heater delete cutouts.

I have heard of these block-offs for the speaker, I have looked at mine once before back a couple years, but couldn't see much from underneath, I will look tonight or tomorrow.
I have read that these pads kept the lights from the dash instruments from shining on the windshield at night.
