Original Underhood Insulation?
« on: March 12, 2011, 03:12:26 AM »
On another Mustang forum, I noticed a discussion about underhood insulation on '69 Mustangs.  I realized that I have no idea about which cars, if any, were actually produced with this insulation when these cars were new.  I've read lots of differing facts, most of which are pretty contradictory.  Which models actually received insulation from the factory?  Would my car, a June 5th-built Mach 1 from Metuchen, have had it originally?

Thanks!  This was just one of those late night, couldn't sleep, had to know, questions!

Grande's were suppose to receive the pad

Unfortunately for most of the other possibilities there are not enough original cars left with the pad or even the clips left to develop a pattern in what I've got

If it were ALL big blocks then you run across the problem/issue with ram air cars and the hole in the hood. Or the short period of Much I's when the hood received the pie shaped cutouts on the non- ram air cars.

Also a running production change might effect what we are seeing also.

If you guys want to we could start a running count of which cars have been found (by date, plant and options) to see where it leads.

Just a thought

I may be wrong but in '69 I thought only the Grandes received the hood insulation.  In '70 the Mach 1 also received it.  I don't think shaker cars got them though.  In the Mustang regonition guide there is an assembly line photo showing a '70 Mach with a pad.

If anyone has a good original one I heard NPD could reproduce it.  The current reproduction is totally wrong.

My 351C 2 bbl powered Dearborn Mach had underhood insulation when I purchased it in 1986.

My SJ Nov. 68 built 69 Mach 1 had no evidence of a pad and retainers on the pie cutout hood when I bought it over 30 years ago.
The underside was uniformly dirty.

My 70 428 A/C  R code (Metuchen) car had the retainers still in the hood but no pad when I bought it in 1983  (59,000 miles) The hood was uniformly dirty under the hood with clean spots under the clips almost like it had the clips in the holes, but no pad ever installed. MY 70 351 A/C Mach 1 (Dearborn) had some of the pad left when I bought that in 1986, but it was a mess so I threw out what was left. That car still had the original belts and hoses on it when I bought it..

Anyway, here's a nice pic to illustrate the look and the clip placement.
Obviously a repaint with the catch left in place, and it's in such nice shape I'm going to say repro, albeit a quality one.

This would be a great part for someone to repro correctly if you could find a nice enough original.....
