regulator
« on: February 11, 2013, 01:33:42 AM »
I need a new regulator because I don't want my lights to flicker anymore.  Marti Auto Works sells a heavy duty one.  In a previous thread I was talking about correct decals.  Does theirs look correct? And will the heavy duty one fix my headlight flickering?

http://www.martiauto.com/itemselection.cfm?item=VR-3&selecteditem=yes

Thanks

You probably read that flickering lights can be caused by a number of things.  I didn't know marti autoworks sold regulators.  I'd  be interested in seeing a side shot where the plug attaches.  The cover looks ok, obviously should be an ink-stamp instead of a decal.

Whatever regulator my restorer put on my '65 caused the lights to flicker right off the bat, I'm really not sure where it came from, but it was suggested to get a quality electronic regulator and put the reproduction top on it which I did and knowing its not concours correct I haven't looked back since, and all is well and lights do not flicker.

Do you know where you got it from?

I got several from NPD and, with the exception of one that had a broken contact (they replaced it at no charge), all worked well. I don't know who makes regulators today but there can't be too many manufacturers. The seller is the one you deal with and the best way to get any quality product is to install it promptly and if it's defective the seller will replace it, at least most will.

PS - flickering lights are often caused by poor grounds, at the lights, battery to engine, engine to car, etc.

I normally buy from NPD because I am a half-hour drive from the CA store.  I figured that the Marti one would be more concours and figured the "heavy duty" one might fix the problem.

I don't know where the respective suppliers get the regulators to start with.
They have to be mostly correct pieces then the possibly re-paint them and add the stamps with the correct logos.
You may have to buy 2 regulators to make 1 good one (with modern electronic guts)
IF your car IS NOT a concours trailered car you can just use the modern regulator with whatever logo is on it as is.
There used to be someone who sold just the covers that were correct.
I know the plug-in on the electronic versions is not correct, but for me it was the best solution.
I checked all the obvious grounds first before purchasing the new electronic regulator and adding the concours correct cover to it.
Just seek out a known quality brand....may be even a Motorcraft unit??

I did a quick search and found THIS on CJ's site, I'm NOT endorsing CJ but it seems that their prices aren't too bad, they have the correct original style and a MOTORCRAFT electronic unit:

Well you are posting on the 64.5-66 forum, I thought you were inquiring about one of those years.
I'm seeing now that you just might be working with a '67 thats in your signature.
Others may know better than I (because I don't have alot of specialized knoledge on '67s) what color the cover on a '67 regulator should be...

Is your '67 Concours restored? driver restored? what are your goals for it?
