1969 Mach 1, H code- Correct Muffler
« on: May 05, 2012, 06:17:40 PM »
Hello,

This is my first post on this forum even though I have been a lurker for a while.

I am bringing out my 28k miles unrestored survivor  69 Mach 1this summer for the New England Nationals in July. When I had it at the last Nationals in Sturbridge MA, it received gold in the unrestored class.

it is: 1969 Mach 1, 351 H code (single exhaust), automatic trans. Build date 5/19/69

So here is my question, I know that I have the incorrect muffler that a PO owner installed, however, I am 99% sure that the rest of the pipes are original.  I would like to replace the incorrect muffler with the closest correct one and have not been able to find  one.

I think the correct one should be: 2.5" inlet side which is offset to one side, 2" outlet that is centered and approximately 18" long. Does this sound correct?

All of the repro ones I have found are 2.25".

Can someone please point me to the what would be the best muffler to use?

I am also going to attempt to cut the existing muffler off without damaging the existing pipes so I can reuse the,/

Thanks,

Tony

I wish you luck. I've been up against the same thing for quite some time. My "Y" pipe and intermediate pipe on my H code 2 barrel is original and a 2.5" inlet on muffler as well. My muffler isn't original either. And nobody seems to know where you can get either repro or original replacements.  I once had Scott fuller tell me to use 2.25" clamps and modify them, Which I thought, "Nope", not gonna modify a clamp to try to make the clamps  look original. but yet I still get marked off at MCA shows for clamps not being correct.  Is OK though, I pick up in other areas to compensate the loss of points with the clamps.  And I'm only 2 points away from my Grill Medallion and putting my Mach 1 in Conservator.  Good Luck in your search.

I have randomly been looking for a muffler for a few years.

You mentioned 2.5" on the inlet side, however, is your outlet to the tailpipe also 2"?

thanks,

Tony

No, this isn't it. An engine code H is single exhaust, and yes, they did put single exhaust on a '69 Mach 1. We had our Mustang judged in the concours class(Driven) at Pensacola by a very knowledgeable judge(no names mentioned)(actually, he's an MCA National director), and he was going to mark off for our single exhaust because he said it wasn't correct. I told him to go do his homework, then come back to see me.
Well, he came back in an hour or so, and said he was very surprised and didn't know that the '69 Mach 1 ever came with single exhaust.
Well, we learn something new everyday.

Thanks. It is actually a little too long. The best I have been able to figure out is the can  should be approx 18" long.. So I think :)
