Early 65 Fastback trap door surround rivet size?

I have a Dearborn 65 fastback, Oct 64 build.

What size rivets held the fiberglass pieces at the trap door?

Did they have over size heads?

Anyone know of a good source for correct looking rivets?
1965 Mustang Fastback, October 29, 1964 Dearborn Build, In the family since new.

The rivet, 380098-S, is a 3/16in dia, 0.188-0.250in grip, 0.375in head dia, oa body length 0.450in. It's a standard size pop rivet available at most hardware stores. AMK carries a similar rivet, 380334-S, the difference being the mandrel is aluminum and the first is steel.
I strongly recomend that you consider getting a set of the Jim Osborn Mustang Assembly Manuals for your year car.

Thanks! I do have the Osbourne manuals, I just didn't know how to cross that number to a specification.

On the same page (65), regarding item number 25, (370374-S) "Bumper",  I don't seem to that "bagged and tagged" from my disassembly? I do see those listed for sale at various places being called a 67-70 trap door bumper. Do you know if the 65-66s really have this bumper behind the trim as shown?

I intend to get item 23 (359767), which is the 65-66 trap door bumper, as well.

Jim what is the date on that page?  Since the bumpers changed a couple of times during the first year I'm not sure if that represents the rivets used in different times of production. Can't really use the assembly manual IMHO as the only guide ;)

Early cars had small holes for the rivets.  There was a small washer used to keep the rivets from pushing through the fiberglass.  Have a Jan '65 Dearborn car that had the small holes, so maybe done halfway through '65 production?

The 66 Assembly manual specifies the 380334-S rivet, same size, different mandrel, and as the question was for a 65, I used the 65 book. When I move my "K" Fastback out, I'll look at my 65 Fastback. I used Orchard Supply Hardware (a local store, Jeff knows) as a source for my 66 Fastback. It was a perfect match to the rivets I drilled out. I don't see where bumpers came into the picture. I got some bumpers somewhere (it's been several years, NPD?) that "fit". Remember, Ford used a new part number if a different supplier was used, so it could be an identical part. My notes show that 359767-S bumper (also used on 66) was replaced by 380546-S, no source reference, no date.
Get a copy of the AMK Products Guide To Ford Fasteners 1955-73 to get dimensions and a picture of 99 pct of the hardware. 
As to the Osborn Assembly manuals, 50 percent of something is better than 100 percent of nothing. Mine are marked up reflecting what I found on my Fastbacks (and hardtop) plus what others have documented.

Because of complaints Ford issued a TSB article March 29, 1965 for fastbacks built prior to March 1 that same year. At that time new bumper was released and the bumper attachment point was relocated and reinforced according to the article.  The new bumper installed starting that date was 358712-S which was approx 1/8" taller/longer and had a larger base. Don't know (at this time) what the number was for the bumper used prior to that date , the article does not list that :(  Will see if there are any more references

Talk about fly by night, it's "cut to fit" and "paint to match". From an engineering standpoint, the critical dimension is from the upper mounting surface to the tip. There is none.

Hmm, interesting, the holes in the original steel of mine look smaller than 3/16". The hole in the replacement steel look about 1/4", maybe a little smaller. I was happy about Jim's first post as it meant I didn't need to weld up and drill the new smaller holes.

The holes in the fiberglass look fairly large, which seems like it would fit with having a washer under the small rivet.

The bumper I was asking about was actually not the bumper for the door. The 65 Osbourne book shows a bumper into the steel behind the upper corner fiberglass piece. The book calls out two different numbers, the door bumpers are called out as find number 23, 359767-S, the behind the panel bumper find 25 as 370374-S.


I just don't remember, and don't seem to have saved a bumper from behind the corner panel?

Nothing new for repairs and addressing issues that developed after the sale. These were mechanics not engineers ;)  Have once where they suggest filling the tie rod adjusters with chalking to eliminate an annoying whistle some owners complained about - or the old hose clamps on the driveline to reduce (poor mans balance) vibrations ;)

Sorry Chris it seems that we've (at least I) got off the track of the original question so to clarify which bumper? The one behind the rear fiberglass/plastic panels or one of the versions (and locations) for the trap door?
