An old-school method for removing rust?

I saw this on another site: using plain old household vinegar.  Has anyone tried it?  I presume you need to wash the part thoroughly after soaking in vinegar, but...an interesting idea and pretty damn cheap if there are no other drawbacks...

There is still the age old question after removing rust - what to do next?
(Paint is not an acceptable option on "natural" parts.)
