Evapo-rust on Dichromate?
« on: January 29, 2012, 10:26:48 AM »
Good Morning Everyone!
I have an early '65 and am working on the door latch assembly which has a yellow gold dichromate finish. Even though I did a search on this site and read the label and web site several times, I cannot verify if Evapo-Rust is safe to use on the dichromate finish.  Anyone with real world experience? I found out the hard way that Evapo-Rust will take the finish off of galvanized metal and now I am a little leery.
Thanks!

I had some turn signals for my 70 replated, and the sockets were replated I think yellow gold dichromate because they were gold colored.  Due to the plating process, some acid wicked between the two mounting plates and started rusting.  So I used Evapo-Rust to remove the rust.  It also removed the gold off the sockets.

Yes, evaporust is tough on original zinc dichromate plating.  Use with caution.

Thank you everyone for your responses!  I will fall back and rely on my trusty aids of elbow grease, 0000 steel wool and goof off.  I needed to beef up my callouses anyway!

Steel wool will take the finish off quicker than evapo-rust!  Door latches would be ok to soak, just keep checking on them once an hour or so.
