T-10 shift pattern
« on: December 11, 2011, 11:45:13 AM »
My 1966 has reverse to the left and back and some older Falcon and Fairlane owners have said that their T-10-equipped cars have reverse in the forward position.  It is my recollection that top-loader Mustangs have reverse forward.  Is the rear reverse position specific to T-10 Mustangs?  I would appreciate any information readers of this forum can provide.

Mustang was definitely left-lower position, can't offer any help on other Ford cars from that time.

The linkage was left and back for reverse on both T10s and toploaders. An aftermarket Hurst was left and forward without a lockout (heavy spring and an assumption that a 'normal' shift from 2nd to 3rd would not go into reverse, except on certain 409 Chevys - heh, heh, heh).

Sunbeam Tiger uses the toploader from a 63 Fairlane. Reverse is next to first gear.

I've seen NOS 4sp shifter balls with C3 or C4 part numbers that have reverse in the upper left position.  Probably for the Fairlane application (maybe others) mentioned above...

Based on your responses, the Mustang with a toploader that I drove probably had reverse in the forward position because it was equipped with a Hurst shifter.

Thanks for the info.
