VIN Plate Painted -What To Do
« on: December 05, 2011, 03:46:32 PM »
My body shop did not cover the dash VIN plate before painting primer, body color and clear coat over it. What can I use to remove the paint without damaging the VIN number and removing what was left of the flat black accent trim that was applied by the factory?

Going to be near impossible to save the original printing on the plate.  You can try paint stripper in light coats and test some spots.

If they used epoxy primer with a catylist the paint stripper will have a hard time.

Unless something just changed, Marti doesn't make dash VIN plates...   I think someone makes a decal to simulate the black border printing on the tag once you strip the tag though.   John

I think NPD carries the VIN border sticker.  I agree with what others said; if the stripper works (and it sounds like its got a LOT of paint to eat through), it's going to take off any factory applied paint too.  Paint stripper isn't selective about what it will and won't take off, and you'll most likely end up with a bare metal plate.
Too much junk, too little time.

Be sure to request the ECS made version of the border sticker from NPD. Bob

Do those stickers go over the stamped information or are there windows cut out in the product?

If they are a solid decal I found that by cutting out a window (did this on a 69 windshield VIN tag) they looked much better

I believe the ECS repro rings the numbers instead of having a clear material forming a window. The artwork on the ECS version is much better then the Osborne version.Bob

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I did not know about the NPD decal.
