Wiper nozzels finish
« on: November 08, 2011, 04:31:42 PM »
I started a thread in the suspension section on restoring some rear leaf springs and wandered off thread talking about Insta-blak finish and windshield fluid nozzels. As mentioned I spoke with Bob P about the nozzle finish and he mentioned that they should be a dark brown. Below is a pic of some nozzles which i cleaned in evaporust and it is clea that they were zinc dichromate with a dark finish applied over the top. i have heard it was black oxide in other threads. That is why i purchased the Insta-blak poduct as i heard it gives you that black oxide finish in a DIY treatment. Question is shoulkd it be black or dark brown. I'm only seeing blackish grey. The one on the far right with the hose attached hasnt been cleaned sitting on the shelf for 3 decades.

The blackish gray is correct. Its always been a bit of a mystery what the original finish was

Does the dark finish apply to the complete assembly, bracket and tube? John

John from the pics you can see that the stem and the mounting bracket were all dark.

You can occasionally find NOS 68 squirters with the blackish gray finish for sale on ebay and what not. I have heard by others but not seen personally that some of the 68 side marker backing plates were plated with a similar looking plating too. I trust the observations and think it is a production variation by a alternate vendor on the backing plates. All of the backing plates I have come across (where I could still tell the original finish) were zinc dichromate.Bob

I've only seen the marker light and turn signal brackets in ZD. I will look more closely in the future for signs of the black oxide. If anyone has used the insta blak product please post any application tricks or things to watch out for. My nozzelsmaremcurrently ZD so Im getting ready to give it a try. I've seen it just sprayed on a cleaned piece. Do you just spray and let it dry? Do you need to add a product like Boshield?

Not trying to get off subject here but I've seen several of those "dark" marker light retainers. It appears different than the washer nozzle finish and clearly has an irradescense (sp?) to it like the finish is over the ZD. I've often thought they might be done in a ZD solution that was contaminated
