Styled steel wheel trim rings
« on: September 15, 2011, 12:32:01 AM »
Painting wheels over the weekend so decoded to clean up trim
Rings and caps. Noticed that of the 9 trim rings I have 2 are very shiney on the tapered wall. Just as bright as the outer edge. The other 7 are more satin in appearance with a bright outer edge. Did someone in the past polish the Satin out on two of them or did chrome Wheels get a brighter trim ring?

The satin ones are 68 only. The bright could be 67 or 69. Good satin ones are hard to find. Marty

Marty thanks for confirming. I had a feeling that the shiney one would be off with the argent wheels. I hope can find 4 nice ones out of the 7 satin/ brushed left.

They're stainless steel, so you could always tone down a shiny one to make a satin one.

How would I get the brushed look to make it satin? Right now out of the 7 satin I have 3 which should clean up ok. One of the shiney ones are nice but too bright.

2000 or 2500 sandpaper, wet sand and keep the paper straight so the lines are even.

Is it possible to tap out a small ding in the tapered portion so it doesn't look like a repair? Thanks for the technique.

If you can get to the area behind the ding, should be able to tap it out.

Thanks. Finished painting the wheels today and after stripping off the tape I think they came out pretty good. Now all I need to do is add the daub on the back. Ready for tires, trim rings and caps.

When refinishing the brushed center on the trim rings it is easier to get a straight line finish by installing the wheels. You can spin the wheels while holding the abrasive of choice in place. Saves a lot of time and gives a better finish.

I wonder how it would work on a tire balancing machine?
