Convertible Top Motor Fluid
« on: August 26, 2011, 08:19:20 AM »
This question has been asked before but I can't find a definite answer-so I'll ask it again. What fluid do I use for the power top on a '65?  The manual calls for Type A transmission fluid. The original fluid I drained from my car's system was clear.  Some have recommended using Type F or Mercon fluid.  What will work as I get this back together; the top goes on next week.  :D TIA

Gary,
I was going to use Dextron III ATF fluid in mine from what research I've done.

Most use Type F.

You should use type F fluid. I recommend NAPA brand as it's viscosity is a bit higher and it will not seep past seals as easily as a less cuscus fluid. Some say you can use brake fluid but that sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Got to disagree here... I did lots of research on this one.

You should go with Dexron Mercon...even though the original was Type "F".  It seems that the Type "F" will eat the rubber seals over time, where the Dexron Mercon will not. Both do the same job. The Type "F" has properties in it which do not like rubber...

I vote Dexron Mercon....Which is what I have in my pump.. Works perfect.. I would suppose this is the reason that they went away from the Type "F" fluid over the years, but I am not a chemist obviously.
