Negative Ground
« on: July 18, 2011, 10:38:15 PM »
OK...on my MAR 66 C-Code Metuchen Convertible...
The engine/transmission assembly sits on three rubber blocks.  The driveshaft-to-rearend-to-springs is isolated also by rubber.

The negative(-) battery cable is bolted to the right motor mount bracket that bolts to the shock tower, which is not connected to the engine, electrically, except by that little ground strap at the firewall to the back of the block.

Isn't this right?

When I turn the key to start, isn't that little ground strap a little light duty for all that current the starter needs?
It would make more sense to me for the negative battery cable to connect to that stud-bolt behind the alternator, that the transmission coolant line clip is bolted with??

OK.  I would have sworn the Osborne book showed it on the motor mount bracket?
I'll look again.
Thanks

Does the star washer go first, against the block, then the (-) battery cable, then the alternator ground eye, the the stud, then the transmission cooling lines, then a lock washer, then the nut?

+1 on the mounting on the stud.  Not sure of the order though.

The star washer is always supposed to go against the block so it can dig in through any paint to make good ground contact. This can apply to various other ground areas (star washer first)on the car that receive a different size star washer. Sometimes they are put on in a different order by mistake. Bob
