68 Spare tire ?
« on: May 10, 2011, 05:46:18 PM »

I was building one of my 68 coupes into a Concours car but decided there were just too many problems for this car to go that way.  It is now a driver for my wife.  I have what I think was the original spare for the car, a Firestone Wide Oval.  Someday I hope to have a concours car but do not what that future car will be and if this tire and wheel will be needed for it.  What would y'all do with this tire (Store, Sell or Other)?

If you decide to sell I'd be interested in purchasing the tire if it is an original.

Marti report I believe might list the type and style of original tires your car came with. Then.or check the date code on the tire to see when it was made

68 wide ovals were not raised white letter. I think the only exception was the 68 1/2 CJ Marty

I have one of these as well. My understanding is that in 68 the Firestne tire used on the cars had a white wall stripe not the lettering as we both have. I've seen ads from 68 showing this tire available but it may have been aftermarket or released mid year so it could have been marketed for the 69's but then looks like Ford went with Goodyear and Polyglass GT. I may have a pic of the correct Firestone.

I try to find the pic but when the hard drive crashed in Dec looks like that pic was lost. I am pretty sure that this is not orig equip 68 but take a look on the back side . There will be a spot with a long serial number made up of letters and numbers. List what the last 3 numbers are and I decipher them. See if it's 8 characters or 10+.

Originally would have been a GOODYEAR.  Right?

My Marti Report show Firestone Wide Ovals

BTW the stampings on this tire are:

E9B

and

VCLD Y41185

Can someone decode these?

I believe I read that prior to 69 or 70 the longer serial number was only 8 characters then it changed to 10. I may be off here but I believe the tire that John provided a pic of might be 18th week of 75? I will try to double check that to confirm. The pic Scott Fuller provided is the correct tire. Just a plain white wall. Take a look at the pics of the 11K mile 68 that ruppstang provided yesterday. Those are closeups of the tire
